Survival Kit Essentials
(required at all times!)

These are the items that each Scout and Adult carry in their survival kit.  The survival kit should be carried with you at all times when you are hiking or camping.   If you leave without it, it cannot help you when you need it.  Carry your survival kit in a large fanny pack or small day pack.

Highlighted in Bold are the BSA Scout Outdoor Essentials, sometimes referred to as the Ten Essentials.

bulletFirst aid kit: 6 Band-Aids, 2 Sterile gauze pads 3"x 3", Mole-skin 3"x 6", Soap, First-Aid or adhesive tape, Antiseptic, Scissors, Latex gloves, mouth barrier device for rescue breathing or CPR, plastic goggles or eye protection, pen/pencil and paper
bulletExtra clothing - polypropylene or fleece (no cotton!)
bulletRain gear or Poncho
bulletWater Bottle 1 quart - Canteen (military type with metal cup) or Nalgeen
bulletSmall flashlight w/extra batteries
bulletTrail/Emergency food (beef jerky, gorp, power bars, hard candy)
bulletMatches and fire starters (Lighter, Bic is best)
bulletHat/Sunscreen/Chapstick
bulletMap/Compass/Whistle
  
bulletCandle-small
bullet(2) 7-bushel trash bags (lawn size), acts as temporary raincoat/shelter
bullet50-100 ft of paracord or clothes line (REI has some that's orange)
bulletSignal mirror
bullet(2) pieces, heavy aluminum foil (16" x 24")
bulletEmergency "space" blanket
bulletPlastic ground sheet (i.e. used for painting); it's used for shelter making)
bulletPocket wire saw or folding saw (for shelter making)
bulletToilet paper or try baby wipes (store in ziplock bag)
bullet4 quarters (for pay phone)
bulletDuct tape, small roll
bulletWire (for repairs and snares)
