Kit-Outdoor Essentials |
 | Winter Coat with hood is preferred (Ski coat or
Parka-no cotton!) |
 | Winter pants (Ski pants or Wool or Gore Tex)
Loose fitting wool army pants with suspenders are
perfect. Option B would be insulated ski pants.
No jeans or cotton! |
 | Gaiters-cover your winter pants and boots. |
 | Snow or Pak boots with removable felt liners
(Sorels, as a brand name, are an example, but
absolutely no leather hunting boots please.
Leather will get wet and be cold) |
 | Extra pair of boots or possibly liners for your
Pak boots is acceptable. |
 | Socks - Wool or a wool blend i.e. Smartwool, or
polypropylene (3-5 pairs, really!) |
 | 1-2 sets of sythetic-polypropylene or fleece,
wool blend or silk long underwear. Under no
circumstances should this layer be cotton!!!
Instead or wearing cotton breifs or boxers, just
wear your long underwear i.e. go without cotton
underwear! |
 | 1-2 wool shirts or Polypropylene shirt or
T-shirts |
 | 1-2 wool sweaters or Polypro or fleece pullovers |
 | 3 pair winter gloves (wool or polypropylene
liners then a shell over that, one spare wool or
poly gloves is best, mittens are warmer than
gloves) |
 | Stocking Cap/Hat that covers ears a balaclava is
best (wool is best, Scout shop has a good one,
you'll sleep with it on so find a good one you
can wear for a longtime, also Target has some
that are good) |
 | Sleeping bag (winter rated or two lighter bags
together works best, use two zero degree bags
that are synthetic, no down bags, they don't dry
out if they get wet). You may want a fleece liner
and a supplemental outer bag to keep your bag
dry. |
 | Sunglasses (a must item, especially in snow to
prevent snow blindness). |
 | Ground cloth and pad. |
 | A vest (insulated or fleece). |
